GBBO Drinks – Part Two
This week, Olly pairs the drinks for more delicious Great British Bake Off treats….
Prue’s scrumptious Lemon Meringue Pie
Olly’s wine pairing: Tesco Sweet Asti Spumante DOCG 2021 (7%) £5.75
This is frothy exuberant Italian fun that has a similar fragrance to elderflower with a bit of exotic lychee sherbet to it. Light as a cascade of icing sugar, pour this excellent value bubbly and serve chilled from the fridge in white wine glasses. Outrageously upbeat to serve with Prue’s scrumptious Lemon Meringue Pie.
Ginger Bakes
Olly’s wine pairing: Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Spiced Ginger Biscuit Flavour Irish Cream Liqueur (700ml, 15%) £12
This luscious, sweet glossy treat works a charm with gingery flavours. In fact, if you’ve ever enjoyed a ginger snap biscuit, you’ll adore this creamy liqueur crafted with fresh double cream from the Ballyrashane Dairy with triple distilled Irish Whiskey.
Apple and Almond Cake
Olly’s wine pairing: Luis Felipe Edwards ‘Late Harvest’ Viognier Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (half bottle, 11.5%) £5.49 Mix Six, Majestic
With a peachy almost marmalade twist to it, this terrific value sweet wine from Chile is delicious served over crushed ice with a slice of fruity Apple and Almond Cake. You could even garnish the glass with a thin slice of apple if you’re feeling fancy!
Ham and pineapple pizza
Olly’s wine pairing: Orange Natural Wine 2021, Cramele Recas, (13%) £10.99 Adnams
Orange wine is more or less a white wine that’s been made like a red – that’s to say with grape skin contact with the juice giving more texture and grip to the final wine. Orange wine like this is terrific with the Ham and Pineapple Pizza and mimics a similarly fruity and savoury balance. With no additives, this natural wine from Romania is something completely unique to serve chilled.
Meaty Pies
Olly’s wine pairing: Medi Valley ‘A Good Year Cuvée’ 2020 Bulgaria (14%) £9.99 Mix Six, Majestic
Wow! This Bulgarian beauty of a red has totally stolen my heart. Heady spice, plush deep fruit, this reminds of top quality red Bordeaux but boosted uniquely with first rate Bulgarian fruit. If you’re baking any kind of meaty pie while the weather gets cooler, this is a gutsy warmer to grace your table with glory.
Coconut Bakes
Olly’s wine pairing: Brewyork Tonkoko Milk Stout (4.3%) £3 Waitrose
With coconut cakes and bakes, dark sweeter beers are a revelation. This gem of a beer is made with hand-toasted coconut, Belgian sourced cacao nibs, Madagascan vanilla and Tonka beans. The result? It more or less tastes like a liquid Bounty bar. An unusual and delicious brew, it belongs firmly in your basket the next time you’re planning a coconut baked treat.
