Château Chapelle d’Aliénor
Time for a mellow red to match the softening of the season, something gentle and plush to pour either with a large slab of mature cheddar, a hearty stew or if you’re feeling very fancy, go for a full treat of beef wellington.
I was bowled over tasting the Co-Op’s Château Chapelle d’Aliénor 2022 (13%) which is £15 (£16.50 online) and widely available in 666 of their stores.
It’s fully mature Bordeaux with textbook aromas of truffle and a silky palate laden with rich umami depth. With rich blackcurrant power and a hint of smokey graphite as the flavours recede, I found it mesmerising.
80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the bottle itself looks super classy and would make a handsome gift to take round to a friend or neighbour.
Made by the Malet Roquefort family from the heart of Saint Emilion, this is classic, old school, totally delicious Bordeaux.
