Finest Xinomavro
To celebrate International Xinomavro Day this Sunday 1st November, I’ve got just the thing.
If you already enjoy Nebbiolo or Chianti, give this great Greek red a whirl and be sure to decant it to unfurl its entire realm of splendour. Aromas are somewhere between sweet earthy truffles, aromatic black tea and a very ripe raspberry – this stuff is complex.
Often with Xinomavro (you say it Ksee-Nom-A-Vroh) there’s a tomato leaf whiff which, to be honest, I didn’t spot on this one but keep a nose out for it just in case it leaps out at you. This wine is deliciously savoury with impressive intensity and long-lasting flavour. Even though it appears pale in the glass, this is robust red wine, full of life with firm structure that yells out to be paired with moussaka, slow roast lamb, aubergine dishes or even a cheeky steak. Watch out for the compelling kick to the finish which has the vim of a sour cherry plugged into a disco ball. It’s alive!
